A proposal I made to Porsche Cars of North America. The proposal was summarily rejected by Hans Reisel, Technical Publications Director. PCNA to my knowledge still does not have electronic versions of the manuals for the 944.

Dear Mr. Battie:

I am a Porsche owner and, being an design engineer, a great admirer of Porsche technology. Recently I began searching for an electronic format for the Porsche technical bulletins and service manuals as an alternative to the microfiche and paper versions which are already available, but found none. After inquiring at your corporate office, there are no apparent plans to produce such an electronic format but I was given your name as a point of contact.

If indeed there are no plans within Porsche to produce such an electronic format, I submit that I would be willing to create these manuals so that they would retain their original formatting, diagrams, photos, etc. and add such useful features such as search capability and “clickable” indices. The file format would be readable by all computer formats including Macintosh, Unix, and all variations of Windows, and adapts well to multiple formats for distribution (CD-ROM, diskette, Internet, etc.). This is possible through software known as Acrobat, created by Adobe Systems. This software allows an arbitrary computer platform to create the widely-accepted Portable Document Format (PDF) and includes free software to read this file format on all these different platforms. Having used this software format myself, I can attest that it performs as advertised on any computer platform. I would be pleased to submit a demonstration of this technology at your request.

In my current profession, I am responsible for creating documentation and manuals in an electronic format using Adobe PageMaker combined with Adobe’s Acrobat. This has proven an invaluable means for reducing paper usage and increasing accessibility of important information at my place of business.

If Porsche does already have a product which matches my proposal, I would be very interested in purchasing a copy, as would many other Porsche owners whom I know. I will contact you on September 18 to discuss your thoughts on the matter and arrangements which would be mutually beneficial. Please feel free to contact me by any of the below methods at your convenience. Thank you for your attention.

Sincerely,

Matthew J. Warner
